— who's making this

I'm Matt. I design things, and lately I've been designing the days.

I've spent a career making things — film, branded content, product, the occasional company. Somewhere along the way I started pointing the same design tools at my own life, at the ordinary activities that decide how a day actually goes.

Essential is what came of that. Not a program I read about and repackaged — a set of loops I run, adjust, and live with, shared honestly, including the parts that are still in progress.

Then. is the philosopher-designer asking what we're capable of. Essential is the same person at the kitchen counter, working out what that looks like by Tuesday.

Section 03 — How we talk side by side

Side by side, not face to face.

We start from a different baseline than most of this conversation does: we all have vast capacity, and modern life is genuinely overwhelming — it asks for more deliberate, effortful attention than anyone has to spend, which is part of why designing the default matters so much (Kahneman, 2011). That's the shared condition — not a verdict on anyone.

So we never diagnose. We don't imply you're behind, or broken, or that you've been doing it wrong. We're looking at the same thing together and working out what we both see.

Always: warm, specific, generous, patient. Never: hyped, clinical, or coded as optimization. "We" is the default voice.

Section 04 — Straight with you on the table

A few things, said plainly.

Essential isn't medical advice. It's a designer thinking out loud about everyday habits — useful, but not a substitute for your own doctor or your own judgment.

Some of the loops I run lean on products I've used for years, including a few from doTERRA. When one fits, I'll name it. I do earn income from doTERRA referrals — that's on the table — and you don't need any of it to follow along. The practice works with or without.

Nobody wants to be sold to. So that's the whole disclosure: here's what I use, here's how I'm connected to it, take what's useful and leave the rest.

Section 05 — The thinking behind this where the model comes from

What this is built on, and how I read it.

None of this is invented from scratch. Essential is a designer's synthesis of a fairly settled body of behavioral-design research — and where I lean on someone's work, I'd rather name it than imply the idea is mine.

The through-line: most of what we do runs on a fast, automatic mode of mind (Kahneman, 2011), and the durable way to change behavior is less about willpower than about habit — the slow handover from effortful intention to a cue-driven default (Wood & Rünger, 2016; Wood & Neal, 2007), one that takes real repetition to settle (Lally et al., 2010). The practical levers are choice architecture, designing the conditions a decision runs through (Thaler & Sunstein, 2008), and implementation intentions, pre-deciding one specific when-and-where (Gollwitzer, 1999). My own read, and the part I find most hopeful, is Galla & Duckworth's (2015): the people we call disciplined mostly aren't out-fighting temptation — they've built habits so the fight rarely starts. Designing the loop, then, also builds the sense that the next one is yours to design (Bandura, 1977).

The model is still evolving, and the work shows it evolving — the vocabulary sharpens, the loops get better, the videos improve. We try to keep the seams visible.
